When I use google maps to try and plan a route from Sac., CA to Fishing Bridge the planner either sends me thru the Grand Tetons or to West Yellowstone and then up into Montana and around to the east ...

IMO, you should consider going thru the Tetons on the way up. This would be the most direct route to Fishing Bridge.
Then too....The Tetons are GREAT and to see them going and coming would be an added bonus.
