The I-80 route should be a little cooler, even this time of year. Wave as you go by. (We live off I-80 near Emigrant Gap) I'm a bit worried that you don't trust your 2015 Cummins/Dodge.
Because cell phone coverage is inconsistent, I would recommend The Gazettier paper map series. Just get one for each state you will visit. I have a collection for all the western states and do use them even though we switch back and forth to e-maps, namely Pocket Earth.
You can also get overall maps from the Auto Club. It's the only reason I still have an auto club card is for the maps. It's good to have Western States, plus each state you will visit for differing perspectives.
