San Diego towards Sequoia Nat'l Park avoiding LA

Looked up routes avoiding LA from San Diego but get confused on exact routes to take. Some talk about the grapevine but unclear as to how hard a drive it might be going north.

Slowly start north in February.....thanks for any help

    Simple actually. Take Hwy 215 north through San Bernardino and then continue on I-15 to Barstow and then Hwy 58 west to Bakersfield to get to the west side of Sequoia or Hwy 395 north to get to the east side.

    We live in Monterey and this is the route we use to get past the LA basin when heading to Arizona.
