Santa Rosa CA to Olympic NP

Will we encounter any problems driving from Santa Rosa CA to Olympic National Park with a 32' RV towing a toad? We would take Hwy. 101 the entire way. I know we should not drive Hwy. 1 south of Leggett.
  • No problems. Couple stretches in California where you need to go slow and careful despite the honking log truck behind you. Parts of Avenue of the Giants I wouldn't. Do that with the toad. Ft. Bragg is nice and there are ways in and out without using CA Hwy. 1 like CA Hwy. 20 from Willits on the 101 to Ft. Bragg.
  • Not the best way to see the coast, but I assume your heading east after,so US101 is a great drive. Hope you have reservations though. Summers on the coast can be very busy.
  • We've done 101 its entire length with a 40' coach and a 20' trailer. knowing the detours you should have no problems.

I'd simply take I-5 to Portland, then 101. north to Port Angles Wa.

    But

The Redwood area is very doable in your rig.

    Go slow, enjoy !

Oh, Tom and Barb, good grief! And miss the Coastal Redwoods? And almost all of the Oregon Coast? For the speed and efficiency of Interstate 5? David isn't hauling freight, he is seeking to see an absolutely beautiful part of our country. I just can't believe what you suggested to our cousin David from Alabama.

Did you miss this part of my post?

  • No, I didn't mss anything in your post including, "I'd simply take I-5 to Portland, then 101. north to Port Angles WA". You have done the 101...I have done the 101...David should be encouraged to do the 101. Problems, detours...how unenthusiastic can one be?
  • Thanks for the comments. This is a small portion of a two month trip out west from the southeast. We have made numerous trips out west but never to the west coast. Have driven a class A all over Wyoming, Colorado, Arizonia, Utah and New Mexico.

But, we have never been to California, Oregon or Washington. Our plan is to take a southerly route and begin at Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon and Yosemite. Then head across the state to the coast. Follow it up to Olympia then east to North Cascades and who know where from there.

The main thing is we want to visit the coast for a couple of weeks. We would not miss the redwoods for anything.
