Savanna Illinois to Seekonk Ma

Well after 8 weeks on the road we'll be heading back home starting next Tuesday. Last year we picked up I74 out of Davenport IL. then through Pennsylvania. This year I'm thinking about working my way down TO I88-I294-I94 to 90 east. I like I90 but have only been on it east from Buffalo. Also I know there are tolls but it looks like there is a lot of road work west of Buffalo with this I90 route. I really don't want to run through Pennsylvania again but sitting in stopped traffic is a lot worse.
Thanks for your thoughts.
  • I-80 around the south end of Chicago is also I-90 and I-94. It will be very busy during rush hour - busy AM westbound, busy PM eastbound. No way around that unless you go much farther south. (US 30 is NOT a good alternative in that area.) Otherwise it's ok, just expect lots of traffic.
  • I just drove my car from NH to Chicago this week. Went 90/80 the whole way from Mass Pike in Worcester. The drive was actually pretty good. We have made that trip numerous times bringing my oldest son out to college. Hadn't gone for 3 years, now brought the younger one out. Road is in MUCH better shape than 3-7 years ago. There is still some construction going on in the Buffalo area, past Cleveland, and a couple other places, but traffic was moving through the construction smoothly.

Now going through Chicago???? That's another story.
  • I was not going to answer as I have not been on I90 between NY border and Buffalo since May but no one else has chimed in with any more recent info. Thank the lord they are finally doing something about that POS road . The alternative of I86 to Binghamton and then I88 to Albany should not be to bad this time of year I 86 suffers a lot of winter time damage that should be repaired by now. I88 has always been okay
  • I used to live in the Savanna area. Now I live near Chicago. I would avoid as much of chicago as possible. When you take I88 east near Rochelle go south on I39 to I80 east. You will still get some of the Chicago traffic, but it wont be near as bad. I drove round trip to Cape May NJ last month and took 76 across Pennsylvania, it was a nice drive actually, but the tolls are outragous.

I cant say anything about 90 east as I didnt go that way at all. I can say that avoiding as much of Chicago as possible is benificial.
  • I think that only a fool or a masochist would pick a route near to or through Chicago if there is another way. Especially in the construction season.

    My opinion: Don't do it.
  • I'll be travelling that way out to Chicago from New Hampshire next week. I'll post what I see...
