Scenic Drives/Places to see in Ohio and Pennsylvania

We're driving from Michigan to Washington DC on 8/21. We won't be towing this time, but have to arrange our arrival in DC for after 6 PM. We usually take the Turnpikes, but because we have ample time to make the drive we thought it would be fun to stop and see some sights we don't normally see. Since we're not towing, we can take roads and routes that would be a challenge with the fiver behind us.

We've been to Gettysburg several times--the only place that jumped out as us as we plan our trip. If any of you have some suggestions as to alternate routes we can take that would take us through some scenic areas we'd love to learn about them. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. MaryAnne

  • I don't think this would quality as scenic, but we really enjoyed the Rock n Roll hall of fame in Cleveland. The football hall of fame was pretty neat in Canton, but wouldn't recommend going far out of the way or missing a scenic drive to catch it.
  • Johnstown PA near the Flight 93 Memorial has a very interesting history. A disastrous flood caused by human error swept through the city in 1889. There's a National Park Memorial at the dam site - http://www.nps.gov/jofl/index.htm

Stop in the city too and ride the incline - http://www.inclinedplane.org/

And visit the other museums - http://www.jaha.org/FloodMuseum/oklahoma.html

As you work your way south to DC don't miss Harpers Ferry NP - http://www.nps.gov/hafe/index.htm
  • As usual,we've received some great ideas. We've stayed at Wright-Patterson AFB before (they have a nice RV park) and spent two days exploring those museums, so we'll skip that for now. The Amish area in Ohio sounds interesting and we may re-route ourselves to see that area.

I'm really intrigued by US 30 in PA. We've seen the Pentagon Memorial but this would be our chance to see the memorial for Flight 93. I think that's something we are definitely going to do.

I want to thank all of the posters on this forum. When we were towing our 36' fiver posters on this forum kept us out of trouble more than once. We also saw some amazing sites that we might otherwise have missed were it not for the suggestions we received on this website. We are no longer RVing and this is our first major trip without being able to take our "house" with us. I miss that a lot, but we don't miss towing over the bad roads with crazy drivers who don't seem to understand that you can't stop or swerve as easily as you can in a car.

    Safe travels. MaryAnne

I thought there was lovely country around Lancaster, but I was really put off when I saw all these attractions, restaurants and shops that said 'Genuine Dutch', obviously so fake as the Amish were actually German and the word 'Dutch' is just a corruption of 'Deutsch', which is German for 'German'!

    Pennsylvania Dutch

  • The Amish of Ohio is a lovely area. Much, much less commercial than Lancaster PA. Millersburgs and Berlin Ohio are wonderful Amish areas. There is a great museum that takes about 2 hours - Warther Museum of carvings. The Hall of FAme in Canton Ohio.
  • Lancaster Pa area lots to see and do. Sight and Sound theatre near Strasburg where they bring the bible to life on 3 sided stage. Currently playing Noah!
Strasburg, steam train ride, Pa rail museum. Lancaster Co is home to one of the largest Amish populations in the world. Drive the back roads and experience farming with horses and mules. Incredible scenery in the rolling hills.
Lots of wonderful eating places...Bird In hand Restaurant...Shady Maple.
Camping..very highly recommend Country Haven Campground countryhaven.com
Roots Market at East Petersburg on Tuesday for fresh baking, veggies, meats etc.

    American Music Theatre... amtshows.com

    Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre... dutchapple.com

Check out Hershey Pa and of course Gettysburg.

Cann't wait to return to Lancaster area ourselves!
  • Go to Dayton,OH to the Air Force museum at Wright Patterson.
There is some Amish communities in Ohio.
We followed along the lakes between Ohio and Niagra Falls.
  • If you enter Pennsylvania on the PA Turnpike, get off and take US 30 (the Lincoln Highway) in the Greensburg area. It will take you past the Flight 93 Memorial near Somerset PA. Then continue east on 30, it's a scenic route and will take you through Bedford, Chambersburg and into Gettysburg.
It's a nice drive and the Flight 93 Memorial is worth seeing.
