Scenic route from Cherokee, NC to Accord, NY?

Any ideas of a nice scenic route and some possible sites to see? We have stayed in Lancaster, PA heading to NY but any other suggestions? Will travel thru NC to NY from middle to end of June. Accord is near Poughkeepsie, NY and will be staying at 1000 Trails in Accord. Will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Yeah! Good Sam Trip Routing picked it up. We cross under and run West of the Thruway for about 20 miles and then come back. We have done that part of the route before.

There is another tagged as low clearance where US-6 goes under the Metro North tracks at Port Jervis (South of Accord, coming out of the Delaware Water Gap). I e-mailed Public Works in P.J. and they say it is actually 13-8 (measured) although it is marked 12-8. There is an easy local street go-around which I'll probably use.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

If that's the same as 209 in Port Jervis I went thru last year no problem. I did feel like ducking tho. It looks lower than it is but no problem.

We will be going from Orlando to Boston in July. I, however, avoid Interstates whenever possible. (They were all designed using the same Federal Highway Administration template and to me they all look the same)

Once we get into southern Virginia we will go up through Amelia Courthouse, Culpepper, Gettysburg, York, Port Jervis, and Accord.

Then up 9W along the Hudson (Avoiding tolls) and cut across at Troy.

If I am in such a hurry that I feel that I need to use the Interstates, I would rather stay home.

    JMHO.

IN a C I might consider the Parkway/Skyway route but it is too much hassel with a tall 35' fiver.

For what it's worth - There is a supposed 12'7" "low bridge" on 9W about a mile North of West Camp on your way to Troy.
  • I towed a big Montana on the Blue Ridge with no problems. Just hug the centerline thru the arched overpasses. Having said that, I don't take my MH up there. I do take my B van. And Linville Falls campground has plenty of room for any size RV. No hook ups of course.

  • With a 24' Class C you can travel the Blue Ridge nicely. Crab Tree Meadows and Linville Falls are two very nice camp sites with short hikes to water falls. Lu Ray Caverns are very nice off 81 in Va. Lots more camping choices all the way to I66. If you haven't been, Gettysburg is a great stop. Penn has lots of nice state parks off of 81 like Pine Grove Furnace is lovely on a lake, if you go east on I80 Hickory Run is beautiful and then on to Rt209 thru the Delaware Gap NP. Or if you go up to I84 Promised Land is another really nice state park. There's lost more. I lived in Penn for a few years and camped and trout fished in a lot of their parks.

If you have the time and the inclination, the Blue Ridge Parkway and/or Skyline Drive are one obvious choice that's definitely very scenic. It's not a particularly quick way to go, of course.

Second. A nice easy beautiful drive. You can get on the South end of the Blue ridge Parkway in Cherokee. From there you will find more scenic views than your eyes can handle. there are also a good number of CG scattered out along the BRP.

Either take I-40 or I-26 to I-81 east, then I-77 north of I-81 in West Virginia - very scenic.
your first stop could be in Max Meadows (Wytheville) VA at the Fort Chiswell RV Park. Then in WV exit north on US19 and see the New River Gorge Bridge. We usually stay at the Corps of Engineers campground on Lake Summersville, just off US19.
Then head to Harpers Ferry WV. We stayed at the KOA. Also at Hagerstown is Antietam Battlefield. There is also a KOA there.

It don't get no better than that for that route.
