Seattle to Phoenix in December - routes in CA

I have just retired. 1st big trip is the Christmas holidays.
I'm heading down to Fort Worth Tx.

I know in the winter it is best to do I5 to California then turn left vs. Idaho, Colorado, NM TX to avoid winter storms.

My question is in California do I stay on I5 or leave at Sacramento and go down 95 to Bakersfield... to I10

Or Stay on I5 to LA and pick up I10 there?

Thanks,
  • Another vote for 58 out of Bakersfield. Note I5 south of Sacramento is not the smoothest stretch of highway.
  • Don't sweat the 55 MPH in Calif No one drives under 60 towing and cars pass us going 80+. I go I 5 to 10 to 210. I go thru LA only on the weekends around 11 AM to 1 PM. Seldom have a problem in over 15 years and 3 times a year going back and forth
  • You left off the US93 Nevada option. There's another ongoing thread about that option. Many prefer that over the California route, even in winter.
  • I do the Bakersfield, Mohave, Indio thing.

Becareful of the stupid 55MPH limit in Ca.
  • 5 to 210 to 10 is a good route IF you transit LA mid day. Otherwise 58 out of Bakersfield as posted above.

You can do either. I prefer I-5 to Hwy. 46 to Hwy. 99 for a few miles to Bakersfield, then Hwy 58 t0 Hwy. 395 then straight south to I-10. strongly recommend you check road conditions on the Calif. DOT application before you head out.
