Several years ago, our computer-based GPS suggested a "shorter" route. The paved road led to a nice gravel road. The nice gravel road led to a bad dirt road. The bad dirt road led to a muddy double-track going up a mountain into the back side of an Indian reservation. I would not have tried it in a 4WD without a winch!
We turned around in a cleared cornfield, and were back to where we started about 45 minuted later.
