If you are traveling in an RV that is 25' or longer, or higher than 12', then you should probably at least purchase a Trucker's Atlas. It will show all dedicated truck routes in the U.S., interstate and otherwise. Each state is broken down in the front so you can quickly determine if there are low clearance issues on you planned route.
We generally stay on interstates, but we will not hesitate to use secondary routes if they are designated for commercial truck traffic. If you try to ignore your limitations and travel some state and country roads it is only a matter of time before you have real problems in a larger RV.
Another consideration when trying to get off the "beaten path". I am very picky about where I purchase my diesel. I want to fill up at truck stops where they are pumping thousands and thousands of gallons every week, not some Mom & Pop station out in the middle of NoWhere USA that has had that 500 gallons of diesel sitting in the ground for 8 months. I don't mind changing my fuel filters every 12,000 - 15,000 miles, I just don't want to change them every 3,000 miles because I saved .5 a gallon at Billy Bob's StopnRob.
