Several years ago, our computer-based GPS suggested a "shorter" route. The paved road led to a nice gravel road. The nice gravel road led to a bad dirt road. The bad dirt road led to a muddy double-track going up a mountain into the back side of an Indian reservation. I would not have tried it in a 4WD without a winch!
We turned around in a cleared cornfield, and were back to where we started about 45 minuted later.

I had a similar situation in Texas. The GPS took us to a rutted dirt path through a farmer's field. The farmer was standing the field shaking his head when I drove by.
I also used the GPS to locate a fuel stop in Eastern New Mexico off of I-40. It directed me to a fuel station, but there was no on ramp to get back to on the interstate. I tried to follow the GPS instructions to get to the next on ramp and it took me under a very low overpass and I decided to back track. I ended up going an hour out of the way to find a route that didn't involve going under that overpass.
GPS is great when it works right.
