Service on the road

We have a 2008 Allegro on the Freightliner chassis, with the Cummins engine.
When we bought it (used, a few months ago), it had a Check Engine Light.
The guy we bought it from took it to the Cummins shop where they found the wiring harness for the turbo had overheated and melted. They replace the harness and everything was fine.

That is, until our last trip -- the CEL came on again.

That's been 4 weeks ago and the CEL is still on. There is no loss of power, no symptoms at all.

Where I live, it's quite a hassle to get to a Cummins shop so I've just kept putting it off.

Anyhow, we are just about to take a trip and I was hoping to find convenient service along the way, or, even better, mobile service at one of our stopping points.

We will on US331 South of Montgomery AL, then I65 to just south of Nashville, TN, then over to Murfreesboro TN where will be for a couple of days. Then US 70 over to Spencer TN, Then back roads to Glasgw KY where we will be back on I65 to Louisville KY where will be for a few days.

Any suggestions along that route?
  • Most major truck repair shops, especially those associated with one of the major truck manufacturers like Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, International, etc. are usually Cummins, Caterpillar, Allison certified. We had emergency road service work done at the KW shop in Bolling Green, KY several years ago. We were towed in, they got on it as soon as a technician was freed up and we were back on the road by 4pm. Excellent service!

I decided I had to try to resolve it before we leave. Went to Empire Truck in Mossy Oak, FL.
Super service. Worked me in. Found the problem - the sensor in the fuel filter for water in fuel and resolved it.
    Recommend them.

This is where it should be posted - might help someone else in the future:

  • It doesn't need to be a Cummins shop, any big truck dealer repair shop will have the equipment to check it out. Look up Freightliner or any other truck dealer along your route and call to make an appointment because most truck shops are usually booked up 4,5, or even a week......trust me I spent 0ver 35 years on the road driving a semi coast to coast and border to border. Nashville has all the repair shops you could ever need... Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt and plenty of authorized Cummins shops. If you hire a service truck to come to you you will pay dearly for it and he probably won't have the diagnostic/computer equipment like a full service shop will.
  • There is a Cummins location in Montgomery AL. We have used it before for a generator problem. The technician was very knowledgeable, the work was done quickly and reasonably priced. They had to replace our fuel lines to the generator. Call them ahead to make an appointment. We stayed at Gunter Hill Campground. If that doesn't work, there is a Cummins in Nashville that got good reviews.
