SF to Santa Barbara

I am planning a trip in June to CA. Starting in San Diego, to LA, Saquoia, Yosemite, SF, Big Sur, Santa Barbara back to San Diego. I've got everything booked and am super excited!

We are renting a 26ft RV in San Diego. I am comfortable driving large vehicles. Although I haven't in a while, I've driven 20+ foot box trucks, and even a few commercial vehicles. I understand all the concepts: Side Mirrors, increased starting and stopping distances, wider turns, down shifting on hills, etc. All in all, I feel very good about driving it around.

A few friends have suggested, however, that traveling to big Sur from the North is (scary? Intimidating? Dangerous?). The logic I've heard is that going South, the "drop offs" are on the passenger side, whereas going North, they are on the driver's side with a lane in between. I've looked at several pictures of the route, and while it is the case that going south you are closer to the drop-offs, none of what I'm seeing tell me I should be concerned about driving off the road. Frankly, the one spot I can see myself cr@ping my pants as it were is crossing the Bixby Bridge (which is the same going either direction).

I should mention that none of the people who have said this have actually driven this route in an RV (and don't really have much experience driving larger vehicles), so I'm taking most of this with a grain of salt, but I thought I'd get some experienced drivers' opinions?

I'd rather not have to try and completely re plan my trip, unless there is really a reason to do so. If the North to South route is really that much worse than South to North, I may consider it, but if it isn't, I'd rather not go through the hassle.

I'd welcome any thoughts specifically about the question of which way to go. If you could let me know if your thoughts are based upon personal experience, or based upon speculation, I'd really appreciate it.
  • This just came out in the local paper.

  • Last year we encountered several one lane stretches with light and flaggers. We went south to north so didn't really get to use any pull outs. We did see quite a few class c rentals, couple class A and even a full size tour buss. I had rented a car so even though I felt safe I didn't get to enjoy the sceanery too much as eyes on the road is a must. The glimpses I did get were spectacular. So probably do able. Avoid the am fog in summer for best view and as said plan a Hearst castle visit.
  • June has a tendency to have heavy fog at times so the drop on the ocean side may not be an issue as you probably won't be able to see much of it. Final decision is your's. How comfortable are you on that type of road.
  • As long as you take your time, pay attention to other drivers, and watch out for hidden driveways- you'll be Ok.

You do need to check road conditions and weather. The last time we came south that way a storm was approaching. By the time we got half way down it was raining hard with wind and I was dodging falling rocks. A little further south, We were stopped by CalTrans and had to go back due to a landslide. It made for a long drive.
  • I've gone that route twice in two different 38ft motorhomes towing a car. First time because I didn't know better, the second time many years later because I forgot! It is beautiful, but scary and dangerous. Going north you are on the mountain side, rubbing up very close to the cliffs, and quite a few really tight turns. It makes it hard to drive and enjoy the scenery. With a 38ft rig and trailer the turnouts are not really an option. Few are large enough to enter safely and be clear of the road, and if there are cars in the turnout it becomes out of the question. Going South on the ONE puts you on the drop off cliff side, often without any significant guardrail. Sure, maybe a wooden rise, but nothing that would stop your travel down a 100 feet or so. The real danger comes from those trying to pass or those coming at you and over-riding the center line. Do realize that plenty of delivery trucks, box trucks and larger routinely travel highway one in the course of every day business. If you are really experienced with a box truck, and you will only be 26ft or even 28ft the drive would not be much different than taking a large van. It all depends on your true ability. It is a beautiful scenic road, and should be on the must see list.
  • If your spouse is like mine I would not drive it going south. She wants me to ride the center line on any road where there are drop offs. So in my opinion it is your co-pilots opinion that counts not your driving ability. Dick
  • I have done it several times in my 33 ft Class A with a tow car behind. Going south, you have the advantage of the pull offs and vista points without crossing traffic. At the end of the southbound direction, you can camp at San Simeon State Park and visit Hearst Castle...a must see if you haven't done it before.
  • I have done it a few times in my 27 footer. I have never had a problem although caution must be used when passing approaching motorhomes on curves. JMO
  • We pulled our 5er down that route when the fog was real thick. Don't know if that helped or not, couldn't see the depth of the drop-offs. :) Just curvy, not anymore narrow than other 2-lane roads.
  • Is the RV you rented a class C motor home or a trailer?

SF to SB (Hwy 1) is not all that bad. Slow going in many stretches and curvy, but beautiful and doable. Yes, drop offs, narrow is parts, also watch for bicycles it's popular with them.

Hwy 1 north of SF is MUCH more of an adventure.

and... Welcome to the Forum. Have a great trip.
