So. Calif: I-15 at Cajon Pass and also at Las Vegas

On Saturday August 1 I plan to start a trip with our 5th-wheel. Right at the get-go we'll go thru 2 areas on I-15 that I always dread;
1. The Riverside/Corona/Cajon Pass area and going thru Las Vegas.
Here's my plan, please let me know what you think:
Leave San Diego on Saturday morning around 9am which would put us going thru Riverside/Corona & Cajon Pass around noon. Since it is a Saturday I'm hoping traffic won't be too bad at that time of day. But, I hear that road construction is going on in the Cajon Pass area of I-15. Should that be anything to be concerned about?

2. Spend Saturday night at Oasis RV park on south end of Las Vegas. Early the next morning (Sunday), say around 6:00am start driving thru Las Vegas on I-15. I'm hoping that since it will be early Sunday morning the Las Vegas traffic will be light. Any chance of that?

3. Also, which lane should I be in while driving the 30 miles or so in Las Vegas? Remember I'll towing a 5th-wheel.
Thanks,
Glenn

  • the 91 15 interchange is a mess almost all the time, it's being widened.
    We went through there yesterday about noon in a car and stayed in thr #1 lane so it wasn't too bad. but the slower lanes are a total mess.
    If it was me I'd start early Sunday morning like about the crack of dawn, then your worst grade would be the baker grade after it starts heating up, it was 103 here today in Lake Elsinore
  • We also made the trip to and from San Diego a couple weeks ago, actually was Memorial Day weekend. The Cajon pass presented no problems in traffic flow coming or going, it was moving... anytime it is moving, it is good. Read something about an X crossover, where CDOT can make lane changes, when traffic is heavy. Allowing more traffic flow. Oasis, great RV park, just off I15, Sunday morning traffic early should not be a problem for you. That is probably the best time to head North on I15. There are lanes that turn into Exit lanes only, be careful of those. I will stay in lane 2 counting from the left. There is an express lane also on left side. Happy traveling.
  • Leaving early in the day in August sounds like a great idea. We were in Vegas in April for an rv rally and came into Vegas on the 215 to Oasis. The weekends seem much less busy to us.
  • Oasis is great park-our favorite when we are in the area-and easily accessible right off 1-15( south of Vegas strip) We have driven 1-15 towing 33' fiver and never have had issues with traffic on Sunday mornings-our favored time to depart. Have a great trip!
  • Yes there is construction in the pass. Was just there 2 weeks ago. Traffic was slow but it flowed. I turned off at 138 to Silverwood Lake.

    In my experience there is almost always a big wind flowing down the pass, so be prepared for that.
  • Haven't checked but isn't the Oasis on Boulder hwy almost down where CW is? If so I would take Boulder north past AZ Charlies then jump on the freeway north. I always try to stay in the right lane until I get on I-15 then watch the traffic. If it slows jump into left lanes out of Vegas. Once past the big race track at exit 54 things thin out a bit. By staying on Boulder you will miss a lot of freeway tfc through Vegas.
