Back in the early 1960s, when I was living in the village of Marshall, Alaska just north of Bethel but on the Yukon River, one of my main hunting buddies was a man known in town as Old Tom. This was as close as any of the villagers could get to his real name. I was about 24 years old and Old Tom was, probably close to 70. Old Tom was bilingual, Russian and Yupik and I was only monolingual, English as spoken in Oklahoma. LOL But Old Tom and I enjoyed our times together, traveling by snow machines, dog teams, snow shoes, etc. I spoke very little Yupik but we somehow communicated.
One evening, sitting around the camp fire he told me that you could trust brown bears as they did what they told you they were going to do. If they acted like they were going to charge, then that was probably what was going to happen. But black bears were the most dangerous, according to him, as even the bears didn't know what they were going to do next. He said it was because, when God (Beaver Man, in Yupik) was making all the animals of the earth, he made too many rabbit brains and when he finished with making the rabbits, black bears were next on his list of animals and so he used the extra rabbit brains in them as well. That is as good an answer as I have ever heard. Current score on bears versus joe b. is joe b. 5 - bears 0. I plan to leave it at that if at all possible. A well seasoned bear roast, next to the mashed potatoes or stuffing, is a real meal, IMHO.
