We have AT&T and bought $90 worth of Text and Talk minutes for Canada. The phone was a brick and a complete disapointment. As far north as Watson Lake we had zero service from it. At the visitor center, the ladies there said AT&T phones don't work the whole length of the Canadian portion of the Alaskan Hwy. I got online with AT&T from there and they removed the text/talk package and credited it back without a hassle. We have had good luck using wifi from visitor centers so far, but don't count on your AT&T phone. And be sure to put your phone/ipad on airplane mode!
It's not that it's AT&T, its that there's only cell service in the towns where the people are. When you're driving the road and don't see any houses out there for miles and miles and miles, none of the cell providers are going to build expensive towers out there for just the occasional car to use. It doesn't matter whose cell service you buy.
