South to Boston Area

Having to make a trip next month to Taunton, MA. Will be traveling by car which makes things easier, not to mention probably better for my first time north of DC. Since company is picking up tolls, not worried about avoiding them.

Was thinking of making it a loop to maximize scenery. With three days travel time each way, should have a some what leisure drive.

Northbound General overview:
I26 to I95 to B/W Prkway (295) to I95 to NJ Turnpike then continue I95 to Providence to 44 over to Taunton.

Southbound General overiew:
I495 to I84 to Scranton picking up I81 to I77 to I26.

Should I reverse the route and take I81 northward? Unfortunately, I'll be traveling the NY/MA portion of the route on a weekday regardless of direction of travel.

I'm not too worried about the I81 route as it is pretty straight forward. But the northbound route with congestion bothers me.

Comments/thoughts/suggestions?

  • dahkota, yep I just left the I95 section out for some reason.

The Pallisades Parkway tip is what I'm looking for as options. Up through DC I'm good on, it's north of there that I don't have any clue.

Congestion most places I go means three traffic light signals to get on the intersection and never have two of those back to back. Traffic up north is going to be a real nightmare for me.
  • You do know that B/W Parkway doesn't go to the Jersey turnpike, right? You will need to hop on 895 or 95 to go through a tunnel and, either way, you will be back on 95 to pick up the turnpike unless you take side roads.

Personally, I would avoid NYC and the portion of 95 in that general area. There is an opportunity to hop on the Palisades Parkway at Fort Lee. From there, go North to the Tappan Zee bridge to cross the Hudson. Follow 87 to get back on 95. It adds about 10 miles to the trip but will save quite a bit of time.
