Highway 160 is highly recommended. We've done it often and is a favorite part of the country for us.
Plan to stop in Pagosa Springs and soak in the wonderful clean concrete pools of varying temperatures as you overlook the river with kayakers and float tubes passing by. You can easily spend a few hours at the pools. Pack a lunch. They have tables around the pools.
Then plan to spend some time around Durango and perhaps drive your towed vehicle up to Silverton. It's awesome.
Stop at Mesa Verde Nat'l Park if you haven't been there - or even if you have.
You'll love the drive!
