We do NY and New England to Indianapolis & Bloomington every Fall to visit family on our way South. The best route we have found so far that we would take (reversing it for you) would be:
Take 37 from Bloomington to 475 around Indy, then
I-70 East to Columbus, OHio, then
Take I-71 North to I-90 toward Conneaut, Ohio
Take I-90 just across the NY Border and pick up I-86 to Binghamton
Then I-88 from Binghamton, NY to Schenectady, NY
I-88 to I-90 to I-87N
I-87N to Exit 7. Follow NY-7E to VT-9 to I-91N
I-91N to I-93 and you should have it pinned down from there.
We have used this route as far as Ascutney, VT.
Total this route: 1,161 miles
We have found great campgrounds for stopovers along the way:
Marengo, Ohio (259 miles from Bloomington)
Conneaut, OH (178 miles from Marengo)
Campbell, NY (208 miles from Conneaut)
Ascutney, VT (332 miles from Campbell)
Send me a note if you want further info. The campgrounds are posted on our website at
