Southport/Ft. Fisher Ferry

For my NC friends. We're headed to Willow Tree in a couple of weeks just for the weekend. When we leave on Sunday, we're probably gonna go to Britt's to get a few dozen doughnuts.

The last time I went on the ferry, it was fairly crowded but it was a weekday. There was quite a line and the ferry was full. But we were in the car.

If we did the ferry, we'd have the Work & Play. That's about 50' of truck and trailer. What would you do? We like the ferry and it saves the driving miles and fuel. Its always a nice ride. But a truck and trailer take up the room of four or five cars. If that means some have to wait for the next boat, I'd feel bad.

Anyone else done it? Should I just go on up to Wilmington and come back down?

  • I live close by but don't use the ferry much. Did go over in Jan to the Aquarium. They are using newer ferries now. Not much bigger but I think it will handle your rig, although I must admit I was not really looking at whether it would handle an RV when we went.

Like Ken56 said, I would call them. I just looked for a local number in the phone book but could not find anything except the toll free ferry schedule number...8002933779. I am sure they have a local number but it may not be listed. The Southport Chamber of Commerce is 9104576964 and Southport visitor center is 9104577927. Maybe they can answer your question or give you the local Ferry office number. Good Luck
  • I suggest you call the ferry service directly. I took the car on that ferry too some years ago and I am not sure it has the clearance to the top deck to fit a trailer under it.
