My wife and I attended the opening day in 2010. One word, FABULOUS! It's not large, but it's the best I've ever been to. And, the setting and weather can't be beat.
The vegetables were huge, but we were told the large ones come towards the end of the fair. The Alaska State Fair has a lot of things you won't see anywhere else. One thing I remember was the lumberjack competition and show; lots of fun.
Since we flew up, I can't help on the camping. Our departure for driving up (first time) has been delayed, so now I'm going to try to attend the State Fair this year. I'm very interested in the camping situation, too.
Take the time, it's worth it.
