Stations that carry diesel

New to owning a diesel truck, I know where they sell diesel in my town. That is about only 10% of the stations. My question is if I am driving in open country and need fuel, how do I find it? A cell phone app is not dependable (cell phone doesn't cover every were) what does someone use. I have seen signs along Freeways with a D in the middle of a picture of a pump. But they are only along Freeways not Highway. And there may not be any truck stops along your way. Is there a GPS that would have this information? Also does the book Next Stop cover non-freeways?

Thanks

Buster

  • Diesel is everywhere around here. I am able to spot the stations and the diesel signs will be displayed in green.
  • Away from large cities, diesel will be available at most stations. The reason is farm vehicles and the like are largely Diesel powered. Diesel is a high volume item around Manhattan, Kansas, not so much on Manhattan Island in NYC.
  • Get the nex exit book and all those gas station written in red carry diesel
    Gaetan
  • Rural areas are easier to find diesel in than the city. Most every farm community has diesel at most stations. Finding diesel in the Bay area of CA is harder but not difficult. Valero and Arco often have diesel pumps in CA, sometimes only one pump on one island but it is there.

As mentioned Gas Buddy is a good source
  • The I phone, I pad app Trucker Path Pro is good - also GasBuddy has a setting for diesel
  • We had no problems finding diesel, even in Death Valley when we were in CA a couple years ago. Any area that has a lot of RV traffic (parks ect) will usually have diesel at the fuel stations. If you are near a major highway that is. If you are out in a sparsely populated area you can run into problems. Gas Buddy is the best solution and if you are in an area that you think you might have a problem then fill up when your tank gets to half full.

That being said, be wary of stations that may not get much business, diesel does not improve while sitting in an under ground tank. It absorbs water from the air.
  • In the southeast and up the eastern seaboaard, I've come across very few stations that don't sell diesel - even in the "back country." Around town, everyone from Kroger to WalMart to the national and local chains sell diesel. I've also found GasBuddy very reliable (and few places my Verizon phone doesn't get a signal). Perhaps the left coast is different...
