Suggestions for Washington State Alternate Plan

Hello all. We had reservations for Pearrygin Lake State Park for next week which has now been cancelled due to the wildfires in the area. We do still have reservations for Lincoln Rock State Park for the week after which are still valid as far as we know right now, although I'm sure that could change between now and then.

Now that we are not going to Winthrop does anyone have any suggestions for an alternate plan? We are not sure where to look and still make our Lincoln Rock reservation. Also, if anyone can provide current conditions in the Wenatchee area that would be appreciated as well.

Our hearts go out to the families of the lost firefighters and those evacuated from their homes.

Thanks in advance.

  • We live just outside (west) of Wenatchee. The weather today is upper 80's, mid 90's and sunny. No smoke today as the wind yesterday scoured out the smoke.

There are no fires west of Wenatchee at this time, so Lake Wenatchee would be a good choice. Confluence State Park in Wenatchee is also open for business.

Getting south on 97 will be a challenge, and I understand the 20 was closed this morning due to a fire on the west side.

There are several dozen fires burning north of Lake Chelan, including the Omak, Concunelly and Riverside areas. Too many fires to list.

More fires north and west of Spokane too.

Come south on I-5, then east over Stevens Pass to Lake Wenatchee.

How about Alta Lake State Park, They are recovering from last years big fire and I would call them 509-923-2473 to check on conditions, but its a nice little park. The first section is the older section and spaces are rather tight, but has tall trees and wildlife, and the upper section is better but more parking lot like. We were there in the spring when the little birds decided to make a nest in our refrig vent.
The big problem is the whole area is really smoky.

Thanks for the suggestion but it is closed as of this morning too :(

I'm thinking we have a big problem on our hands!

I'm not surprised. We have a big mess going and Lincoln might be short behind them. Maybe you should check out Alaska or north of you guys. I hear that Canada is beautiful this time of hear.

  • You could check further east - the Sun Lakes, Banks Lake area and the Nat rec area behind Grand Coulee dam.

Another area would west along US2. Leavenworth for touristy stuff, Lake Wennatchee for state park camping. Stevens pass as an alternative to the WA20 North Cascades.

There are some closures along US97 around Omak, (coming south from BC), though with these largely grass fires conditions change rapidly.

  • Here in eastern Washington we've been inundated with smoky air all week, despite being many miles from the fire sites. It's as bad as I've seen it for 35 years here.

I suggest remaining on the West side this time. Try the coast.

Side issue: after this past week in both BC and WA government parks, there's no question the BC parks are being maintained to a much higher standards. Out WA State Parks are abysmal.

I would stay on the west side of the cascades!!
