Taking Fiver up Hwy 1 to Big Sur from Southern California

Hey everybody,

My first post on this forum. I tried to search to see if my question has been addressed, to no avail.

I will be taking my 33' 5th wheel up hwy 1 from so cal to Big Sur. I will be staying at Big Sur Campground and Cabin.. I was thinking of taking Hwy 101 to Paso Robles then head west to hwy 1. My concern is I travel these same roads once and awhile on a motorcycle and remember the switchbacks north of cambria and I know the road narrows. Has anyone on this forum traveled this route and have any advice? Thanks in advance for your help.

You can be sure you won't be making any friends with anyone who is unfortunate enough to get caught behind you. Not many places to pull over to pass with a rig that long. How fun to stare at the back of a trailer for miles on end with no way to bail out and get around.

The good thing is that it's off season at least. Combine that with week-day driving and you'll have less traffic stacking up behind you than peak weekends.

It's either me or be stuck behind a Prius or Subaru at the same speed with those folks refusing to pull over for hours lol. I know it's a tall order. Thanks for the motivation ha

    Cheers!
  • I believe an extra 10' length is allowed for articulated vehicles.
Go have fun. I would take it. But if you are getting a cabin why the trailer?

For some people the slightest curve or hill discourages them from taking an RV places including PCH Ragged Point through Big Sur. For others they just do it. Ninety- nine percent of bicyclists are going north to south to avail themselves of the prevailing wind, they will be no issue for you going north. And virtually all motorcycles will not be any factor for you, either, as they simply want to get on up the road and are not a hindrance to anybody. Believe the naysayers if you want or just go do it. My only suggestion is to be sure you know where your wheels are around corners especially the front truck wheels to give you the most room in the lane for cornering with the fifth. Other than that -- go for it. If you want to worry about it, Caltrans has a website with max lengths allowed on state highways. You might check into this segment. Google 'Caltrans maximum vehicle lengths on state highways'. If I recall trucks are limited to 65 feet long between Carmel and San Simeon. But, check it out the map and corresponding color coded descriptions are interesting.
  • Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at other options. Although I have been accused several times of having a death wish. Thanks again

Last month I could not take my 42' MH on that sections as there is a 40' max length for a single vehicle. Pretty sure there is a a max length for your type of rig, but not sure what it is.
  • I agree with all the above. It's a deathwish if you even try to take your rig up or down that route!! I would only as far as Ragged Point (nice restaurant and hotel there) But that's it!!!

  • Drove the Big Sur Highway {Monterey down to Morro Bay}, last month in our 24' Class C. That stretch of road is not recommended for a rig like yours. IMHO: A few do it but most should not in anything over 30'.

You will encounter lots of bicyclists {most of whom have a death wish}, much of that stretch has little or no shoulder whatsoever. There are numerous pullouts but most folks just don't bother to use them. Add in the motorcycle crowd trying hard to drive that road way too fast and the frequent pea soup fog that often engulfs the road without warning and you have a recipe for disaster.... add an RV that is incapable of staying inside the double yellows (yours is) and you are just asking for trouble.

A much better way to go would be to park the fiver and drive it in your truck. Spectacular gorgeous road that you will enjoy so much more being on the correct side of the safety equation.

    As always.... Opinions and YMMV.

  • We did it last fall with a 23' motorhome. Didn't see any fifth wheels in that route. Probably a good reason for that!!
