Telcel Internet

We have a brand new Telcel tower in Kino and it is line of site to our home. I was planning on getting a wifi modem from Telcel for our trip South in January but bought one to try today. Our internet is broadband in Kino but we are beyond the distance limit for a decent speed. I went to a Telcel office in HMO and the clerk explained most of it in Spanish. They did not have any promotions and as far as I know no "Air time" is included. I have not bought any data from Oxxo but have the number assigned to my modem. It came with a Sim card so you can put this into your Telmex cell phone and text them to apply the data purchased. Easier to do it right from the laptop. The monthly plan is cheap but month to month as required is $299 for 1G, 339 for 2GB and 399.01 for 3GB. We are only using one device, my laptop, so no mifi is required. What else do I need to know before activating? I was going to insert the ZTE MF180 into the laptop and let it setup. The off to Oxxo ( around the corner). Any help appreciated.

  • I forget the exact procedure but you go to the Telcel box in the Banda Ancha window and Click to get to Telcel and then Mi Telcel and open an account using the banda ancha phone number if you haven't already - get a password - this will allow opening your account which is where I think you can find your pesos and time used. I could be wrong as I have not done it yet this year and right now we are on WiFi.
  • To get the messages from Telcel - password or whatever - you go to that same Message box in the banda ancha window and Click to open and then click the message. In the Message box you will have Inbox, Outbox, Draft, New Message. Inbox is where you get messages from Telcel and New Message is where you send them messages.

You have to apply pesos to your account based on the plan you want to use - or module as Chris calls it. You may not always be able to hit it just right. We put in two $200 pesos to get to $400p and use one pesos to send the message to get the $399 plan and our 400 is gone. There are several plans with several amounts so you kind of have to figure which is going to work based on the pesos amounts you can buy at OXXO. I forget the details.

We loosely base our usage on what we use in the states which is usually between 5 - 10 GB a month. We use WiFi a lot and there are two of us on the computers so maybe we use more than some and less than others. But if you buy too much and have time left at the end of the month you lose it and whatever it cost you. Sometimes they have 60 day plans but I haven't seen one this year. Personally I think these prepaid plans tend to cost more but we don't have much choice here. We could by a full year plan but then we would have to pay monthly whether we are here using it or not. One year we got 5GB for 60 days for $400p - and we used it all because we were in places without WiFi. Now more places have WiFi so we don't use Telcel as much. But we sometimes want to get online while on the road and can't get WiFi - even going down the road - or somewhere that does not have WiFi. We do not always get our monies worth but it is better than not having anything - for us anyway.
  • Thanks Brian: My problem is that once my computer is started and I get the Banda Ancha window I connect. After that the widow closes and I cannot get it to open again. I have an Icon for the Telecel banda Ancha but clicking on that simply opens a box that says Banda Ancha is already open. I have to do a restart of the computer to get to the window?? I looked in programs but all I get is the same link as my Icon??

  • I assume you have a PC. Look in your icon tray at bottom right, open tray < look for the Telcel icon in tray, not the one on your desktop. I think, right click and it opens the original window you have when you start Telcel. In the upper right are words, Internet connection records. Click that and window opens which shows every time and how much you used. The total is at the bottom.
Once you can see these times, things are working and you can get messages. Click the message button to get them. Sign up for mitelcel with stick phone number and get password in a message.
  • Thanks John> I had searched in the hidden icons but could not find it. Finally by the process of elimination I found it under UImian. Last night I registered my cell phone on mitelcel and tried to order time for my modem. I never got to a page to enter cc information. But I did get hooked up last night. Seems they had already linked the modem and phone to the same account and took the 99 pesos from my cell phone time! All is good. I am fortunate that there is only one or two people in my barrio that have modems in their homes. But there are people driving around with smart phones. On the weekends the circuits will be loaded. I did 3 speed tests an hour ago and it is still around 2.8 to 3. But the download is worse than dial up. .05 of a GB. My Magic jack is great at my end but the recipient of the call gets lots of echo. Must be something inherent in the Telcel 3G. Thanks to everyone for the help. I would still be in frustration land without that help. Hard to believe that just 7 years ago our area only had a bad dial up. I had satellite internet and it was barely OK. Today I am almost in the real world! Back in Canada we get 20 GB service at my business and I get 5GB at our house as we live in the country. Now back to Youtube!

  • Moisheh,

Which Windows do you have? I have 7 and 8 and my banda ancha window does not go away. When you open your email program or internet browser the banda ancha will stay in the background if you do not click the shrink bar at the upper right of the banda ancha window. If it does go away there should be an icon down on you task bar - could be left or right - on the right it could be you have to open additional icons to have it show. If you do not see the icon there may be a little UP arrow thingy next to the icons on the lower right. If you click that it will open a box with more icons. My banda ancha icon is a tiny little computer - click to open - may have to double click. I does get easier as you fool around with it.
  • Thanks Brian. My flavor of windows is 7. I did find it by clicking the arrow and checking every hidden icon until I found the right one. I was looking for something with telcel in the name but it was that UI main. I am getting familiar with everything. Thanks

  • moisheh, when you bought the stick you probably got some free time with it that they initiated for you. That is probably why it is working without you buying extra time.
