Terrell Tx to Wichita Falls

We are presently at Bluebonnet Ridge in Terrell TX--just outside of Dallas. right off I 20.

Tomorrow (Sat)we are heading to Wichita Falls. Mapquest, our GPS, and Google give us different routes around Dallas.

One takes us up 183 to I35W to 287. Another takes us up TX114 to 287.
Another takes us I30 to I35W to 287.

Which would be the easiest, fastest way to go on a Saturday morning in August?

Thanks, as always
  • gradgal,

Get back on I20 going West, go to Forth Worth and exit 820 North until you reach 287 West and you are almost there, about an hour to Wichita Falls. Traffic will be moderate but not that bad.

  • I mostly agree with square dancers. Get on I-20 at Terrell, go around the south side of Dallas. But go all the way to I-35W in Ft Worth, then north to US 287. The last time I was on Loop I-820 around the north east side of Ft Worth (a few months ago) there was major construction there.
There is also major construction on 183 just east of Ft Worth before you get to I-35W.
And there is major construction around the area of 114 in Grapevine.
Taking I-20 to I-35W is a better choice than taking I-30 to I-35W.
Saturday morning should not be a problem traffic wise.
  • If you want to avoid Dallas, which we always do, take TX Hwy 34 from Terrell, up to Greenville TX, then US380 west through Denton TX to Decatur TX where you pickup US287 N to Wichita Falls.
  • I agree with the square dancers. It is the best route, we lived and worked in Wichita Falls for many years and have pleasant memories of the town and people that live there. Be sure to eat at the Branding Iron restaurant if you can. Best food in town.

I-35W northbound from downtown to 287 can be miserable any time of the day right now, and it's under construction. I recommend the route quoted above OR 114.

There's a few ways to consider the 114 route, but I'll give you two. The scenic downtown route and the straightforward route.

If it's not rush hour and you're adventurous, the best views are to go:
    - 80 westbound from Terrell to I-30 westbound
    - take the US-75 / Central Expressway northbound exit
    - very quickly, take the I-35E northbound connection exit (Woodall Rodgers) (sp?)
    - Take I-35 E northbound and get in the left lane
    - Take 183 westbound towards Irving / DFW airport at the split
    - Take 114 wesstbound towards Grapevine at the next split
    - Take 114 to 287 in Rhome

    To avoid Dallas:
    - I-20 westbound to 360 in Arlington
    - Take 360 northbound to 114 in Grapevine
    - Take 114 westbound to 287 in Rhome

IMO, this last route will be better than going through downtown Fort Worth OR getting onto 820.

I didn't read your entire post.

For Saturday morning, I recommend anything EXCEPT I-35W though downtown Fort Worth.

The 114 route in your GPS should be fine.

My first "scenic" route is probably the shortest in miles, as it takes advantage of every diagonal. My "to avoid Dallas" route will be the easiest. They'll be very close to each other time wise.
  • On a Saturday morning I'd take the 114 route. As others have stated, I-35W through Fort Worth to US-287 has some congestion issues. We traveled through it with our trailer (5'er) three weeks ago and it wasn't fun.

Regarding Wichita Falls, we stayed a night at Coyote Ranch RV resort and were very pleased.
  • We have reservations at the Coyote Ranch RV Resort. It looks very nice.

We have never been in this part of the country so it's all new to us. We usually head to New England and the Canadian Maritimes in the summer but this year, heading to the Grand Canyon.

I thought Florida was hot but this heat in Texas and Louisiana is something!!!!!!!
