Texas to Portland - Mid December - Route advise?

My hubby and I will be in Texas until mid December and then headed home for Christmas. We want to avoid LA but have a few concerns about the route to take pulling a 5th wheel via Barstow and/or the Grapevine. We do plan to come back south to Arizona in mid January so maybe we need to store RV there and just drive the truck home? Anyone have a favorite route from Phoenix to Portland?

  • If you have thoughts about storing your rig why not store the truck also and fly home.

Southwest has a non-stop leaving Phoenix at 7:00am arriving Portland at 8:55am.

Many flights to Portland out of Phoenix.
  • Firstly you don't say where in Texas however you mention Phoenix and LA both of which I 10 would have to be your choice and or you mention Barstow which would best be reached by using I 40. If your overall goal is to avoid LA and the grapevine I 40 to Barstow and on to Bakersfield avoids both with good roads and little weather issues. And out of Bakersfield use a sometimes rough state hwy 99 north. That time of year stay on top of weather conditions...that is what keeps you out of having weather related issues. If your starting in the Dallas/Fort Worth area use US 287 to Amarillo and use I 40 west. US 287 is a much under appreciated highway, but it's the best if Barstow/Bakersfield is a destination.

    I-10
Hwy 62 out of Palm Springs
    Hwy 247 to Victorville
    Hwy 395 to Hwy 40
West on Hwy 40 to Hwy. 99 at Bakersfield
Go west to Hwy 46 to I-5 then north to Portland

Check your weather conditions daily before departing!!!!!!
