Texas to Portland, ME

Get the Illinois iPass for the toll roads. It works on all the northeast tolls. Easy to get and reload the money online.

Where would I apply online for an EZPASS? Would one pass cover most of the states that we will travel through? I read rvparks reviews about Tri State. Thanks for confirming what others had said. Will check out your suggestions and see if schedule will put us near those stops

You can apply for EZPASS online. We were originally in Maine, so when we moved to TN kept our EZPASS accts, and when we bought the motor home, added a motor home transponder right online and thru the mail. We use it for the tolls in NY, Mass, NH (and yes, you'll go thru the Hampton NH tolls before hitting the Maine toll in Kittery on I-95). If you are asking for a place to overnight, we stop at Ft Chiswell RV park in Max Meadows VA, Western RV park in Carlisle PA, Newburgh KOA in Plattekill, NY, then the last night we are at our destination. I believe they still have an overnight RV and dump station in Connecticut eastbound at Danbury rest area on I-84 if you are looking for a quick in and out.

(On edit: might want to avoid Tri-State campground at Matamoras, PA. It is right off I-84 in PA just before you cross into NY. It should be a handy stopping point, but it was pretty nasty when we stopped a few years back. From the highway, it doesn't seem to have improved since then. Others have stopped there and camped in their field with limited or no hook-ups and didn't seem to have a problem, but we won't go back.)

I'm not sure if you can do it from TX but an EZ Pass makes life much easier. I'm also not sure of that exact route but in NH, some toll spots you don't slow down with an EZ Pass but pull off to a traditional booth for cash. You're not going through NH but EZ Pass is still handy to not deal with cash. As long as you aren't towing commercial, the camera recognizes a trailer and charges your account accordingly. Value will depend on if you see yourself in the NE again.

Also starting to run into license place enforcement if you don't have a pass. (I got hit in Dallas on a rental car. Avis was nice enough to pass on a $25/day "convenience" charge).

Just a head's up on I290-it goes through the heart of the city of Worcester, has some fairly tight curves, and the road isn't always in the best of shape. Do NOT go through there at rush hour. You can stay on the Pike (I90) until it hits I495. It's a few extra miles, minimal extra in tolls, but is an easier drive. If you hit 290 at an odd hour, it's fairly easy to navigate with the caveat the lanes are a little narrow. Oh, one more thing to watch out for on 290-speed traps.

I have a place in the RGV and relatives in NH and have tried every route there is.

We also use this route every year going from just west of Knoxville to New Hampshire. The Tolls last spring were $3.05 for the NY bridge toll, $3.15 for the mass pike to exit 11A and $5.00 for the Hampton tolls. Not sure what the Maine toll at Kittery is now but would guess it is under $5.00. These rates are based on billing to our EZPASS. We were in a motor home with a toad. The only city we find a little hairy is nearing Hartford, so we try to get there early afternoon before the rush hour and although the lanes keep shifting, we try to stay in a center lane to avoid the aggressive people entering from the on ramps.

I can't seem to find a good place to stop along I81-I84 stretch. Do you have suggestions?

This is a pretty good route. I've travelled it dozens of times and there's nice scenery and traffic usually isn't too bad. Expect a lot of construction from Pennsylvania north.
