I think many of you missed the original point in my post about cards be they debit or credit as long as they have a Visa or MC logo on them. And I was using the term Credit Card to cover both and should have been clearer.
The point was in the Church book it says that Pemex do not accept credit cards (or debit). I was pointing out this was NOT TRUE any longer. Second I also noted that cards are accepted at most places now where they were not at the time the Churches wrote the book.
My post did not say it was better or not. Though I do believe for most people it is better and safer to use the a card. It is certainly safer than carrying large amounts of cash on you.
It sounds as if some are being charged extra fees for foreign transactions...not necessarily the actual exchange. All you have to do is monitor your account ans see what processed and compare the exchange rates.
When I have several substantial accounts with one bank, car loans, Boat loan savings and checking and maybe a retirement account I sit down with the bank manager and negotiate out the fees. I simply tell them I can take all of my accounts to another bank who will not charge me ATM fees or other onerous fees. Losing big accounts is a blow to any branch manager and you will be surprised how much they can make happen for you.
