They are probably the same bunch you see on tour buses in the western parks. They ride for hours to get to the park. The bus drives a loop road, stops at a couple of pullouts and lets them out for 10 minutes. They rush to the scenic overlook, get some cellphone selfies with the park in the background and jump back on the bus. By the time the bus leaves the park they may have spent an hour on the ground. They don't walk any trails, see little wildlife but they have 'been to the park'. They can check it off their bucket list.
I actually have done that type of vacation that you mention and it was great. Since we still work full time we are limited on time. We spent a week in South Lake Tahoe renting a house with my entire family to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. At the end of the trip family and my brothers family drove from Tahoe to Yosemite. We only had 1 full day to spend there as we had to drive to San Fran to catch a flight. We had a blast at Yosemite. We went on a 15 person tour bus that lasted four hours. It was so informative and our ranger was wonderful. Yes, we only saw the highlights. Yes, we were not able to go on trails for any significant length of time. BUT we were able to experience it and appreciate it for the amount of time that we had.
