The Grand Canyon

While in that area, try to visit Zion National Park. Its north of the Canyon and a spectacular place. Happy camping..........

I have stayed at a few parks along I40 in arizona, I was happy with all of them. Meteor Crater just outside Winslow Az. Flagstaff KOA on the north side of Flag on us 89. Williams KOA that is on I40 near Bearizona. All were excellent and many things to do in those areas.

Simple as this - stay at Trailer Village so your time will be at the Rim and not driving back and forth from someplace and missing the early and late day most beautiful viewing. The GC makes a good day trip for us, we stay for us at Ft Tuthill a military campground in flagstaff. As noted above there are many areas to day trip out of flagstaff. Williams has an air museum we have never been to yet and that is on the way in/out of the canyon depending on route of entry/exit. many smaller places to visit as noted plus you can also day trip to sedona to the south about 50 miles, jerome any number of places and it will probably be a lot cheaper than in the park I dont know for sure. We have stayed at the KOA in flagstaff and it was very nice. get with the tourist burea here in AZ and request the state campground stuff as they will also list the tourist spots to visit. Monument valley is ok but you will stay at mexican hat I think it is. Utah has some very pretty state campgrounds we will visit, Kodachrome and Gobblin parks are the main ones and the rates are cheap.

I don't recall being too impressed with the Petrified Forest when I was there about 18 years ago. Don't allot too much time for it.

We were at the Grand Canyon late March last year and it was very busy.

Happened to be Easter and school break . We were there in April and May in the past and a lot less people.

It has been a couple of years since I was there but I remember in June it was cool. I have heard that they have snow up to June. I believe that the bathrooms in the RV park are not heated. The showers in the tenting area where the laundry is located is heated. You will be beating the crowds and should be able to have all the time you need to talk to the Rangers, and be sure to do that as they have wonderful stories on the history of the park and area. Check the park calendar for events in that time period.

The Grand Canyon is at 7000 ft. Going to be cold at night in late March.

If you can, you might move your trip to at least April. The weather will be much better at that time. We were in a big snow storm on I-40 the end of April one year and the interstate was closed for 1-1/2 days. We sat in a very crowded truck stop. Weather is unpredictable but I wouldn't trust March if you have a choice.

I would plan on going the southern route (I-40). I-70 and north can get quite snowy in late March (some of our best skiing time!)

CloudDriver mentioned Sunset Crater and Wupatki NM's. Also in that area is Walnut Canyon NM. Definitely worth walking the stairs to the bottom of the canyon to see the ruins up close. Look closely and you can still see where someone's fingers applied the mud to the chinking between the sandstone blocks. Of course all three of these NM's are near Flagstaff, which at 7000' can still be a little wintery in late March. (I have to assume late March is spring break 'cause otherwise a little later is better for this relatively high area -- the south rim is also nearly 7000' in elevation and snow is not uncommon in late March). While not as big as Mesa Verde and some of the other ruins of the SW, both Wupatki and Walnut Canyon will give your kids a good exposure to the Native American culture and structures of the southwest.

I'd suggest Trailer Village at the south rim so you have quick access to the rim. (The shuttle typically isn't running at that time of year.) Head out there to watch the sunset at least one night. You'll know you're not in Indiana anymore!

When we travel in late fall and early spring and will be camped with electricity, we take an electric heater with us (the kind that look like an old radiator). Quieter at night and besides, why burn the propane if you have electricity? Prepare for cool temps. The average high for late March is mid 50's and the average low is in the mid to upper 20's.
