So I am thinking about taking year or two to explore the western US (AZ,NM,ID,CO,UT,MT) I am working on compiling a list of sites to stop at along the way. I will be leaving from GA, with the adventure beginning at least past MO area.
This is my partial list:
I want to make an effort to stop at attractions that are usually featured on "top ten" lists (travel channel,etc) I am interested in touring factories,gold mine,silver mines ghost towns, locations that were used to film movies (Hornick, Iowa 1984, Children of the corn) I would like to try and get to Banif and maybe Alaska before the southern southwest.
Let me know what you think. I am pretty open. I believe I would be starting my trek right after X-Mas.
I would eventually like to stay at the grand canyon (south rim) for an extended period of time also.
Just a couple of thoughts;
First I'd suggest working on a thirty to sixty day itinerary, this would allow the suggestions to be more on point. It would allow a little forum banter as to what you should see in each area as you are planning that portion of the trip.
It will also allow you to take into account the weather and your own personal likes and dislikes. In the case of Colorado if you had planned to be in the Estes area at the time of the flood it would have caused you to be in different parts of the country in some less than favorable weather if you already had long term plans. Starting after Christmas will put you into the desert during the winter and the mountains or Alaska in the Summer.
You will also find out that out West the State and local Parks are often real highlights of an area, and should not be missed. as you do a little more extended travel you may find your travel comfort zone and plan the trip more to your liking as to distance and length of stays.
Last is the simple fact that the National Parks are for the most part crowded in the Summer so we have worked around the country so as to miss most areas that are too Hot or Too Crowded.
Just a couple of thoughts,
