Time restricted route???

I was on Mapquest tonight doing some preliminary planning of a trip across Canada this coming summer and it stated that part of our route was across a time restricted route. Does this mean that the route is closed during the winter? or am I missing something here?

  • Major border crossings are open 24/7, others open at least during business hours. I wouldn't worry about these time restrictions. You normally travel during the day, and camp at night.

But could you list some of those time restrictions?

Restrictions like this are not new. It's just that the mapping programming is starting to include that information.

Another type of restriction comes to mind - some urban freeways have reversible express lanes (designed to ease rush hour traffic). And now they are experimenting with HOV lanes with variable tolls. But that sort of thing affects local commuters more than long distance RV travelers.
  • Thanks to both of you, this is going to be more complicated than I expected. Oh well what else is new. LOL
  • A couple of possible time restrictions come to mind:

    - Part of the Bow Valley Parkway in Banff Nat Park has seasonal and dayline restrictions to protect wildlife (i.e. reduce run ins between wildlife and cars).

    - many of the small border crossings are closed at night.

However I can't trigger such a warning when I play with routes on Mapquest, though I see such a routing option.

I just found one time restriction - in Vancouver

Turn right onto Oak St/BC-99 S. Continue to follow BC-99 S.
BC-99 S is just past Osler St
Closed to vehicle traffic: Mon-Fri Midnight (start of day) to 5:45 AM
Closed to vehicle traffic: Sat,Sun All day
If you reach Shaughnessy St you've gone a little too far

    Another Vancouver restriction:
    .
    Turn left onto Kootenay St.
Kootenay St is 0.1 miles past Skeena St
Capota's Pizza is on the corner
Timed turn restriction: Mon-Fri 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM

So if there are restrictions, the detailed directions should elaborate.

Mapquest "Timed Restrictions" Routing offthegrid 91 Points
January 2011 edited November -1 in GPS Discussions
The new Mapquest 'route planner' online now includes routing using 'timed restrictions' as part of their data.

    The article states
"I live on a street with a school - they close part of the street off from 8:30 to 3:30 or 4. Mapquest has that data when routing me to or from home."
