Tioga Pass - This little baby can...

Indeed, I almost ran out of low gear on my 4runner towing a 5K lbs TT... but this little baby can.

Tioga Pass is 9,900 ft pass, continuous uphill 6% grade, scary deep ravine and unprotected-without road barriers highway. Been around West Coast white knuckle and multi-hair pin turns and steep uphill climb.

Is there anything more challenging out there than the Tioga Pass or the Conway Summit at 395 in East Sierras?

I know, the struggle comes with the thin oxygen of these high altitude highways. And the inability to start with a momentum as the base of the highway is already on oxygen-deprived 7,000 feet above sea level.

Tioga Pass isn’t that challenging IMO. Conway is just long. Sorry, I disagree.

The next one to the north, Sonora Pass, isn't quite as high, but steeper (Wiki says 8% overall, 26% in places), and very curvey. Tight climbing curves will be the worse, especially if you are long or have a trailer.

And the next, Ebbetts Pass, is narrower - sections less that 2 lanes wide.

Monitor Pass completes the trio of passes for those seeking a challenge on 2 wheels (motorized or not).

I always look at Sonora Pass and I imagined it is what you've said it is, lol.

I like adventures, but I avoid aggravations if there is an alternative.

  • Beartooth Hwy (Yellowstone NE Gate) might be a little more intense!
