Tioga Road

I just read an article in the Mammoth Times that Tioga road will open at noon today. This will be the earliest it has opened since they started keeping records of it in 1980.

May 2nd is very early, but the record is April 29, in 1988, in a similar historic drought year. Was a bad patch of drought years in the late 80s, as it opened May 2nd in 1987 as well.

I've gone many years this time in May and I've never seen the flow so low on Yosemite falls as I do now on the webcams. Dramatically lower.

And, yes, this is a very early opening date for Tioga, but we had so little snow/rain this last winter that it's not surprising.
And let's pray we don't have a repeat of last years wild fires. The Rim Fire was devastating! We all need to be hyper careful-the state is bone dry.

  • That is early! Tuolumne Meadows is a gem that many people never spend any time in.

Not so good for the folks that go at the end of May/early June looking for good waterfall flow though. Things may dry up early this year.
