1991 Tioga Water Leak

As I mentioned in my other post about the electrical problems, my buddy who is new to RV'ing and borrowed my Tioga had problems on his first night!  Poor guy.

When he hooked up to city water everything was cool, then this morning there was a flood of water, mostly gushing out beneath the water-heater area.

Two questions:

Will temporarily using the freshwater tank and the water pump work if this is a leak around the city water lines?  (Seems the freshwater and citywater lines connect before going to the water heater).

If the problem is the citywater line going to the water heater, how difficult to fix and what's involved in that repair?

Hope this isn't too vague, I'm more than happy to provide whatever details I can.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

  • there shouldn't be a city water line going directly to the hot water heater.  the city water line usually ties in after the tank water pump but before anything else and there is a check valve between them so you can't fill your tank unknowingly.  so there is a good chance if there is a leak somewhere it will be weather your on city water or tank.  was the leak inside the rv or on the outside?  if the inside their should be a panel over the hot water heater you can pull off to inspect the lines their and see what's going on.  that is the same age as my truck camper so it might not have a bypass system so you might have to access it a different way.  if you can get a flashlight and see the lines in that area and then turn on the pump water it will either tell you it will work or help you figure out what's leaking

If city water hookup doesn’t feed the water heater how can you have hot water on city water?
I haven’t been around every kind of camper by a long shot but every TC, TT, TH, A and C I’ve been around has hot water on city water hookup.
To the OP, just gotta do some investigation. Leak could be anywhere and barring someone having memorized the plumbing layout of your exact RV, not likely to get an answer without laying eyes on it.
but being old, more likely could be a rotted out water heater than if newer.

I think your just stirring things up for the heck of it, the city water line doesn't go directly into the hot water tank, it ties into the main RV cold water line after the pump and usually before any fixture or tank.  it supplies the whole rv system and like I said it is normally right around the pump discharge or a short distance away where it ties in so when winterizing through the city water fitting you get yours whole system.  but I will edit that to make it a bit more clear to you
