TN I-75 Closure - US 27 Alternate Route

DW and I will be traveling to Perry, GA on 15 Mar. from Cincinnati, and with the I-75 closure am looking at alternate routes. Currently the plan is to head to Louisville on I-71 and then I-65/I-40 to reconnect with I-75 again south of Knoxville. That adds about 60 miles to the trip and I'm sure traffic will be very heavy as well. I was just wondering what taking US27 from Lexington, KY south to I-40 might gain me. Has anyone traveled that route in recent times that can comment on any issues that might be encountered going that way, and if it will do me any better than the I-71/I-65/I-40 plan?

Thanks in advance for your comments.
  • Make sure you check with TN Smartway as both south bound lanes are scheduled to open on the 14th.

One north bound lane should open on the 21st and both north bound lanes should be open by April 15th.
  • Ahhh... You are right. (Brain freeze.) From Nashville I'd take I-24 to Chattanooga and catch I-75 again. Not sure what I was thinking when I typed the OP.

But the question about US-27 still remains. When My wife and I camped at Fall Creek Falls 2-yrs ago, we travelled TN-111 down to Chattanooga and it was a great road. Just wondering if US-27 would be similar. Thanks.
  • I'd go to Chattanooga to rejoin i75 myself. At least it's expressway
