Toad Insurance?

In the past we have pulled a 5er SOB so one vehicle policy covered the tow vehicle with the 5er added to the same policy. This time Motorhome pulling a toad and it looks like we have to have two policy, one covering the Motorhome & one for the the toad. This accounted for two times the cost compared to past policy with 5er even tho the total value was the same. This is what I found when on Lewis & Lewis online quote process. What are others doing or is this correct? Thanks!

  • Every Motorized Vehicle has to have it's own Liability Insurance policy!Depending on You , a more comprehensive policy may or should be purchased to cover damage due to Collision Etc.

Trailers are an entirely different category and are usually included in the Liability portion of the Towing Vehicle.

A separate " All inclusive policy", may also be purchased to cover said Trailer and it's contents. Remember that a Trailer that is not attached to a tow vehicle is not covered by the Tow Vehicles Liability Insurance.

Another little item that isn't often discussed concerns the actual limit placed by these Insurance Companies on the Cost of Repairs!

In Mexico repair costs are considerably lower than in the USA or Canada. As a result Mexican Insurance Companies often limit the Labor Rate to around $40 per Hour. This is too low to cover repairs done North of the Border.

It is up to You to Ask the Insurance Agent about the optional Higher Labor cost "Add On"!

Note: There are really only 3 insurance Companies that offer coverage for Foreign Owned Vehicles in Mexico. Their Rates are very Competitive and the real differences that Agents quote to "SellInsurance for Less" are just optional items such as Labor Limitations , deductibles and Legal representation!
  • In Mexico, if it has a motor, it must have it's own insurance policy. We have a MH towing a car on a dolly. The dolly is covered by the MH policy and the car has it's own policy.
  • Please let me clarify, I am NOT towing/own a 5er or a trailer anymore which is entirely different from my question. I would like to know what people have found to be the best way to purchase Insurance for towing a Toad (another vehicle) behind a Motorhome in MEXICO. Thank you.

  • When I tow a trailer of any type it is true the towing vehicle covers the liability. However, if the trailer is damaged and it is my fault I want to make sure the trailer is repaired. How that happens is with the 2nd policy on the trailer. You may want to check your policy fine print. You are right though minimum liabiliy can be covered under 1 policy. Some insurance companies may be different.
  • Why would you not have toad insurance?
When not being towed, it is just a car.

You must have had insurance on the fiver when it was just sitting.
    Not connected to the truck.
