First get yourself a good map book/road atlas of the states.
Where do you plan to cross into the states? Looking at a map there seem to be three possibilities: the Detroit area, Sault Ste Marie or into upper Minnesota.
Don't forget the crossing at Sarnia !
The Upper Peninsula of MI is unique compared to the rest of the Midwest. Still heavily forested, lots of natural beauty. You could easily spend 4-6 days crossing the UP just to see all of the sights.
Detroit is not as bad as many make it out to be. Not much downtown to see anyway unless you want to go to a ball game. The best thing in the Detroit area is the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Probably the BEST indoor and outdoor museums of Americana from the late 1800 forward. Plan at least 2 days. A third day if you want to add in the Ford Rouge factory tour. They are all in Dearborn, the most heavily Muslim city in the US. No worries. Interesting food. You probably will not see any women in burquas, but you will see a lot of hijabs. (Worked there for 31 years; still live 15 miles from there.)
If you enter the US through Windsor/Detroit or Sarnia/Port Huron but want to bypass the UP (lots to see in the nothern part of Lower Peninsula of MI), you can take a ferry across Lake Michigan from Ludington or Muskegon. Avoid Chicago ! Traffic can be a nightmare !!
