Just a term comment, in the US the Midwest is considered to refer to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin. What you will mainly be going thru are the Upper Plains, the Mountain States and the Southwest States.
Take a northern route one way and a southern route the other. I don't know if Canadians know how big the differences are between the mountain states and upper Midwest vs Southwest and South. Very different food, people, sights, etc.
