I would suggest keep going west after the well named Bad Lands to Yellowstone/Tetons and then south. If the forecast is then for hot weather I would head to Colorado and then to the N Rim as it's cooler and has real trees unlike the S Rim. IF the forecast is for cool weather (not likely) then Utah to the N Rim and then up to CO before heading east on I-80.
Why 80 instead of 70??? There are only two good ways to see Kansas...at night or from 35,000' as you can count all the trees using your hands and feet.
thanks , maybe last part of aug and part 0f sept, will take everyones suggestions into account , very helpful nothing cut in stone just yet
