Tourist Visas at Lukeville

Seems to me I saw something about this a while back, but a search for it came up empty. :h

My question is: I am traveling to Puerto Peñasco and on to Bahia Kino on the new coastal highway in February, returning via the same route. Are visas available at the Lukeville border crossing, or at the migra near Estación Almejas east of Puerto Peñasco? Thanks.
  • One thing to keep in keep in mind is that this a deserted area of Sonora. The coastal road does have some rest stops but not one Pemex, puesto or even a residence. Way up in the hills there are a few fancy homes. Probably drug cartels! Libertad does have a Pemex. Between Libertad and 16 there are a few military and police check points. One short detour where a bridge washed away about 200 years ago and has never been repaired! Enjoy!

  • Moisheh: Planning on staying a week (7-14 Feb), but may stay longer. I've made the trip from here to Kino via the 15 more times than I can count. Will be fun to try a different route.
  • Jeff: In a truck you will be fine. The coastal road is quite nice but I haven't been on it for 2 years. The semis have been taking that route to avoid the waiting @ Benjamin Hill so the road could be damaged. The rest of that trip is boring other than the time spent dodging pot holes! We will be on the road somewhere in the south in February! How long will you be in Kino?

  • Libertad has a great open air restaurant on the road next to the beach downtown next to launch ramp. Can't miss it, there is a t-shirt/trinket store next door. Got a really neat t-shirt couple of years ago as they were preparing for the increased traffic thu town. Think it as taken a little longer than planned. Worth the stop.

  • Thanks for the update regarding construction, Moisheh. I am making this trip in my trusty old truck, as I am between TTs. Haven't driven the coastal highway yet, but I am willing to brave some construction/bad roads so I can see for myself. If you'll be in Kino in February, I'll look you up. Would be good to put a face with a name.
  • You should be aware that the highway from Penasco that connects to the coastal road is under construction. The detour is one of the worst I have ever travelled. Are you in an RV? If so the road from Libertad ( Calle 36) is also in horrible condition.

  • We got our visitors visas right at the gate at Lukeville. We were the only ones there so just left the MH in the middle of the road and went into the immigration office to the right and then crossed the road to the bank to pay the fee and then went back to the office and the visas were issued. No photocopies of anything asked for which was good because we didn't have any.
