If Lassen & the Redwoods are your goal, consider this. Take 5 to Redding. Leave the fifth wheel at any of a number of great parks in Redding. We use Premier. Very easy day trip to Lassen. Good chance they've closed the campgrounds up there by now, too. If the road is still open, hike Bumpass Hell trail. Miniature version of Yellowstone. But no grizzlies! From Redding take 299 to the coast. For me, it is a whole days drive to get there from Redding. It is a beautiful, well used route. There is a good downgrade just before you get to the coast. We usually do our first night at either Mad River RV or Sounds of the Sea. Day trip it north to Prairie Creek Redwoods. The elk are awesome. If you have the time take the road there to the coast. From the Eureka area, take 101 south with the fifth wheel. That will take you through the Avenue of the Giants. Better to do that without the fifth. Ancient Redwoods RV near Redcrest, if it hasn't shut down for the season, is where you want to stay. You'll pass Trees of Mystery. Worth the stop. Exit 101 at 20 near Clear Lake. Take 20 back to 5. This exactly how I did it last time.
