Trail Ridge Road (RMNP) Scheduled Opening - UPDATE

From news reports tonight...

RMNP has Trail Ridge Rd open (on the east side) beyond Many Parks Curve, now to Rainbow Curve (about 5 miles beyond Many Parks). Apparently making good progress in clearing the road, recent storms notwithstanding.

Scheduled opening for the road all the way through is by May 27th, weather permitting.

Heading up to Moraine Park this weekend ! !

Thom always good to get the update - we'll be flying out just before it opens to play with the GD's, might just run up for the day.

    Thanks,
  • H E R E - RMNP Plowing 2016 is a video from Denver TV station KUSA-9News from last night, showing the plowing progress this year. Drifts are "only" 17 feet, as compared to the previous season 20 feet. Obligatory news reports each year on this tradition; they actually started reporting on it back in March-April timeframe.

Plowing under way on the west side as well, though no video of that side. East-West side plows scheduled to meet up at the Alpine Visitor Center. Forecast for the coming 9 days should aid in their quest to get the road open by May 27th.

Be there next week - will try to take the GD's up to see while we are there.

    Thanks for sharing,

Thom, are you and I the only ones who look forward to Trail Ridge?
  • LOL, well Bill, I do look forward to it opening up for the first time every season. I try to get up there before the crowds get too crazy, and driving with the "snow walls" is something that has to be experienced!
  • I USED to love it when we lived in Estes Park! We LOVED Rocky!
  • Updated info 05/24/16

Trail Ridge Rd still scheduled to open in time for Memorial Day weekend. Plan is to open the road on Friday, 05/27/16.

Additionally, per CDOT, Guanella Pass and Cottonwood Pass are scheduled to open on Friday, 05/27/16 as well. Independence Pass is scheduled to open on Thursday, 05/26/16. All are weather permitting.

Heading up to Rocky this weekend! Hope to be among the first to get in and go up and over to Grand Lake. Weather forecast for the week and through the weekend is favourable.

Had hoped to get up there this week with the girls but had not opened yet - elected to just go to Golden Clear Creek - Miss that place - but it has been discovered.

I mean - Creek front - Community center - Ball Fields - Tennis Courts - Play Ground - Library - festivals - Just hard to imagine something so close to the City the Mountains and some great Wild Places.

Thanks Thom for the update, when you drive through POST a Picture of the 13' wall of snow. Jealous.

    Love Colorado,
