- coloradotallmanExplorerWhy go over Raton Pass in NM? (poor state, little snow-plow budget) Head up to Amarillo and then over to Denver and up I-25. About as flat as you can get. With the exception that it could snow anywhere during that time from McAllen all the way to Montana. Or safer, take I-35 through San Antonio and OKC to Wichita, thinking that the Interstates have snow removal.
- pauljExplorer IIExcept for Raton Pass, I25 stays east of the 'hills'.
- padredwNomadThe big unknown is the weather, but as for the routes. I would head for Amarillo*, then up to Dalhart and over to Raton. I consider Raton an easy pass. From there I-25 will take you all the way up into Montana, after it merges with I-90.
We went by Big Timber, MT. and enjoyed staying at Spring Creek RV Park, then on to Great Falls, but there are several variations possible.
Now we are very familiar with this route all the way from Amarillo to Glacier National Park, but our towing was in the summer. We came down to Kalispell from Glacier. Cannot comment on weather in March.
*US 281 to I-10 at San Antonio-- to US 83 at Junctiion -- to Tex 153 at Crews to Sweetwater -- US 84 to Lubbock -- I-27 to Amarillo - pauljExplorer IIAim for I90 in eastern Montana or Wyoming. Cross the divide on that, and take US93 north. I90 has a couple of passes, but they are all freeway quality.
Or aim for US2, and cross the divide on that. US2 has just one pass, and that is relatively low. But getting to it will involve more wind swept plains driving.
Another option is diagonally across NM and Utah (Cortez, Moab and Price) to I15 in Provo. But that still passes through the high junction of I15 and I90. - 1492ModeratorMoved from Forum Technical Support
