Is I-10 a good and safe route to travel with so much news of border crossings? Is the highway in good shape?

Today, and much of the next few days, freezing weather, freezing fog and freezing rain will be an issue.
I've spend 6 months below I-10 in west Texas in 2014 - and the news stories and worries about border crossings are a bunch of political BS.
It's safe - safer than a lot of Houston.
