Traveling through Houston

Going to be driving east through Houston in a couple days and looking for recommendations on routes. I'll be coming down Hwy 290 and don't have a EZ Tag. Does the Sam Houston Tollway read your license plate and send a bill like they do in some other states? If I can't drive on that, its looking like 610 would be the closer route. Of course we'll be traveling late morning to avoid the rush hour crowd.

Late mornings to mid-day you won't have any issues using I-10 or the 610 loop. And as for the suggestion that going south on the Sam Houston, that would be a mistake.

Agreed. From 290 the north I-610 loop makes a lot of sense. And as RamTX said, check traffic on Houston Transtar.

Just traveled 290 yesterday. They are working on 290 pretty much continuously, but lane closures are mostly between 9:00 pm - 5:00 am and at various times on weekends. As some have said travel thru Houston between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm and you should have no trouble except if there is a major wreck then all bets are off. If you have a smartphone or tablet you could go to the Houston Transtar website and find real time road closures, accidents, etc.

  • during rush hours I usually go around the south side tollway but it adds up, even for a car.
