Traveling from SW Michigan to Gettysburg/Landcaster

We are traveling to Gettsburg with our 30' 5th wheel the end of May. Looking for suggestions on the best route. We will probably be stopping one night on the way. Any suggestions on where to stop? Also looking for a campground recommedation for Gettysburg.
  • Most all of the campgrounds around Gettysburg are good. I use Artillery Ridge, because I can ride my bike from there to tour the battlefield and can ride right into town.

When you get to Lancaster, the locals will know right away you are a tourist unless you call the place: LANK-a-STIR.
  • I come up I-81 from the south to Chambersburg and take 30 into Gettysburg and I also stay at Artillery Ridge. 30 goes right through the middle of the battle field and is a great trip. Its a a little tight in some of the roundabouts but nothing you can't handle. We travel in a 36ft class a with a toad.
  • The above routs are fine but after the Ohio Turnpike tolls the PA Turnpike tolls add insult to injury. We run I-76 to Warrendale, PA, I-79 to Morgantown, WV, I-68 to Hagarstown, MD, I-81 to Chambersburg, PA then US-30 to Gettysburg, PA.

All toll roads just about anywhere but especially in the east, have raised tolls to ridiculous levels for RV's. Google them up and your vehicle class and you'll see what we're talking about. The PA Turnpike has gotten to past stupid, especially considering the road condition and it's age, but you're trading tolls for gas so you need to figure the run both ways. We run to Alaska every two years from Delaware through the Michigan UP and I try to keep the states from balancing their budgets on my back. I-68 has a number of nice Maryland State Parks along it, but we boondock in Ohio, so I don't know how easy they are to access.
  • For a overnight stop depends on how far you want to drive, the Ohio turnpike has rest area with elec spots for around $20 @ night, not every one, if you wish to get into Pa at New Stanton there is Fox Den Acres we like and at Bedford there is Friendship Village but by then your close to your destination or at least a short next day drive

You may look at the map and be tempted to get off at Exit 161, Breezewood, and take US 30 east to Gettysburg.
Don't even think about it. It's two lane, mountains, turns and a couple runaway truck ramps.

If you were driving it in your car or tow vehicle I would recommend that route. It's a nice drive. But, pulling a 5th wheel, it would not be fun or enjoyable.

Can't speak to the rest, but agree with these statements.
  • Probably the best route through Pennsylvania is I-76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. However, there are Tolls.

Follow the Turnpike east to Exit 236, US 15/Gettysburg. Take US 15 south.

Another option would be take the Turnpike east to Exit 201. After leaving the toll booth turn right on PA 997. Follow PA 997 south until you come to US 30. Take 30 east to Gettysburg. Trucks use PA 997 going to the Letterkenny Army Depot. It's two lane but, good road.

Between Chambersburg and Gettysburg there is one mountain but, it's mostly straight road and not too bad.

Between Breezewood and Chambersburg is the area you definitely want to avoid.

I've never stayed in the Gettysburg area so I can't recommend a CG.
I did travel the area many, many times.
