74 is a good highway and good choice. Problem is around Charlotte. Once you get past Charlotte, Matthews, Monroe it will not be bad. Try to do it non rush hour. Not good anytime, but worse then obviously.
Other option is 77 to Columbia, 20 to 95, then N on 95 to 327. 327 will take you to 76, 501 and MB.
I would bite the bullet and take 74. Not bad at all when get away from Charlotte
