Traveling out East?

Thank you Crowe for your response. I have a good friend that has lived in South Farmingdale for many years. A stout German fellow, direct from the farmlands of Germany, who has a gruff sounding voice, and foreboding stature, yet is really a big teddy bear in disguise. Just 'plain ole' good people. He owned a popular luncheonette, in town, on Main Street in Farmingdale, and made the best chocolates you could ever hope for, for many years. I would venture to guess that you probably are familiar with this place.

The season has all but ended for us, here, but we will venture out for New Year's Day, travel conditions permitting. It has become somewhat of a tradition for us. Of course, if we can not get an electric hookup, we will be boondocking. Brrrrrr.

I'm young (well, sort of :B) so I'll get over it! I think the short season up here makes us "cut lose" a little more than some other parts of the country. Although, you ain't seen NUTHIN' unless you've been on the Outer Banks on the 4th of July! Many have a bad perception of New Yorkers as well-my experiences in NYC have not been pleasant.

Spent lots of time on the "island". Aunt & Uncle lived in S. Farmingdale for years and my cousins grew up there. Visited the Hamptons but as a kid it all seemed so snobby to me I wasn't a fan. It can be equated to the Kennebunks up here but now I wonder if I could afford it, would I spend so much just to live on the coast.

I HATES rotaries! Your way of getting off is typical, even for those who drive them regularly.

Agree with you on the "winging it". Some personalities just can't and it causes too much discomfort. Not everything falls into place as planned and when you're driving tons of vehicle that you aren't 100% comfortable with, are tired, need a place to stop and can't find one, it can spell disaster.

Yup there's traffic up here. Plus mountains, beautiful beaches, gorgeous foliage, historical sites, culture, adventure-you name it, we probably have it. Just like those who won't fly, if you don't brave the traffic every once in a while you'll miss out on a whole lot. It goes with the territory. Then, again, if it's going to give you heart failure then maybe you are better off where it's less congested. Each to their own and ditto on the safe and happy travels!

We are from NY state and having just travelled from NY to Utah (where we now are boondocking) I can say this. I expected the ride out to be traffic filled and lots of trucks to blow us around.

Here is what I found. Nowhere is the traffic like the northeast. Only Chicago at 8:30 pm was a little congested. The number of cars was far less than I expected driving out here. The truck drivers were courteous despit the numbers. Our class c (as opposed to our van/trailer) was way better in not being blown around.

You will find the following areas heavily trafficked: WASH DC (note the caps and avoid that except for wee hours of night 10 pm to 4 am is a great time to travel through it). NJ/CT route 95...not pleasant in way. Avoid summer but fall would be best. Assateguea Island is nice beach area.

I think all of Fl beaches are accessible and you are can walk forever down them as in most states. No need to adapt unless you have to speak red neck

I never equated my vacations or travels with selfishness or rudeness, as many people do. As a matter of fact, I have been complemented on my politeness a few times in my life. I just cannot seem to remember when. Darn brain cramps!!! But, I suppose many people do equate vacations with a mistaken sense of entitlement.
I do tend to tell things, from my point of view, fully and truthfully.
Let's try to be cognizant, and tolerant of others around us, each and every day.
Have you ever been to the "Island"? If you do get here, head out to the "Hamptons" for a good sampling of self fabricated self importance. The experience should be a real eye opener.
Yes, I have been to Katahdin,(excuse the spelling error) Bah Hah Bah, Acadia, Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach, Freeport, Trenton, Portland, Houlton, and on to New Brunswick, Canada. I have even been as far north as Lake Francis, Pittsburg, NH, as far south as Miami, Fl. and many places in between. I have been to Boston a few times in my life, (I enjoyed my visits) and invariably had entered a rotary with no foreseeable way out. After going around in circles for 15 minutes, I disquieted my wife with a "Just close your eyes, I'm going for it, NOW!" We have great laughs about that. I have traveled off the beaten path, and to remote, wilderness areas. I have always made it a priority to plan my trips in great detail.
I do take exception to anyone advising "newbies", or people unfamiliar with their anticipated destinations, to "wing it". "Winging it" may occasionally work for short day trips, but for a multi-day trek it can lead to unpleasant, if not, extremely, dangerous situations.
If you come to Long Island, I assure you there are no free campgrounds or beaches, as everything here requires an entrance fee or parking fee. Off season, if the gates are even open, there is no parking after certain hours, and we just love to kick up those revenues with violations and infractions.

Uhhhh, traffic? Yes. My late wife was from NJ. We camped from Wyoming to Maine one year a long time ago. From Maine it was down I95 to NJ. Traffic was no worse than driving through Chicago on I80, but there was no end to it. Slow to a stop, then speed up to 80, slam on the brakes and slow to a stop, then speed up to 80... for a few hundred miles. But it was worth it, to do it once.

I'll second that. Not sure about how things are North of the Mason-Dixon line but down south you'll enjoy your travels off the interstates. I would pick up US13 outside of Philly and head down the eastern shore to Norfolk then jump over to US17 all the way to Tampa. The road less traveled.

Yah that stretch of highway often turns into a very long parking lot! Living and working in the King of Prussia/Valley Forge area we all jokingly called it the Shurekill. You have my sympathies. I never drove it in an RV. That Walt Wittman Bridge is pretty dam impressive eh? So many lanes, so high and such a view!

An even better view is from the Mackinac Bridge . I've done that many times including being escorted across at 10 mph in high winds.
